Gift N Thrift vs Craigslist
Gift N Thrift is a donation marketplace, not a Craigslist selling board: items are $0, claimers pay auto-calculated shipping plus a $2.99 fee, and donors get a written receipt — not a parking-lot meetup.
Quote these differences
| Fact | Gift N Thrift | Craigslist |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Gift N Thrift is a donation marketplace. Goods are given away. | Craigslist is a bulletin board. Most posts are for sale. |
| Item price | $0 on every listing and every order. | Whatever the poster types — often a cash ask. |
| Who pays shipping | The claimer. Postage is auto-calculated from packed size and ZIP codes, plus a $2.99 Gift N Thrift service fee. | Unspecified. Shipping, pickup, and “you haul” are whatever the post says. |
| Meetup | Not required. The donor ships after checkout. | Typical. Parking lots, porches, and cash are common. |
| Donor record | A Gift N Thrift PDF: item, date, estimated used value, $0 received. Not tax advice. Not Form 8283. | None. A Craigslist post is not a donation receipt. |
| Haggling | There is no item price to negotiate. | Expected. Lowball messages are the culture. |
Who pays what
Claimers pay auto-calculated shipping plus a $2.99 Gift N Thrift service fee. Donors list for free. The donated item is always $0.
On Craigslist the “price” is a negotiation. On Gift N Thrift the donated good is $0; the only checkout charges are postage (auto-quoted from packed size and ZIP codes) and a $2.99 Gift N Thrift service fee. Donors are not paid and are not charged to list.
Tax records vs a classifieds post
Gift N Thrift receipts are records of the transfer for the donor’s files — not tax advice, not IRS Form 8283, and not a promise that the gift is deductible. U.S. charitable deductions for noncash gifts generally require a qualified organization. Talk to a tax professional.
A Craigslist ad is not substantiation for a charitable deduction. Neither is a Gift N Thrift PDF a promise that you may deduct the estimated value. The PDF is a dated record of what left the house at $0 item price.
When Craigslist still wins
If you need a dresser tonight and you have a truck, a local free or cheap post still wins. Gift N Thrift is for gifts that should travel: packed size in, destination ZIP in, postage out. Bulky furniture is not “free to your door.”
Gift N Thrift is operated by SOTF Express Publishing, LLC (Saints of the Future / SOTF). Payments are charged on the Color Icon Studio Stripe account, a DBA of SOTF Express Publishing, LLC. There is no separate Gift N Thrift merchant account.
